Sunday, December 7th
Dear Families,
I hope students enjoyed their first snow day of the year. At this time, I don’t have any inside scoop on if weather will impact school for Monday, so I’m going ahead and sending out our notes for the week.
Our annual curriculum fair will be this week. Students can tour displays in the cafeteria during the day on Tuesday and Wednesday. Families and students are invited to WAHS on Tuesday, December 9 from 6:00 PM to 7:30. Representatives for the Scholar Studios and other division-wide programs such as CATEC and Early College Scholars will be on hand as well as representatives from WAHS departments and specialty electives. Tables will be set up throughout the cafeteria from 6:00 – 7:00 staffed by teachers and/or students to answer your questions about opportunities. At 7:00, I will join our Director of School Counseling, Amy Wright, in the auditorium to discuss the course registration process. We hope you can join us.
I know that snow days are fun for students, but that the interruption can also add stress to the end of the semester. Please encourage your student to speak with their teachers if they are unclear on deadlines and due dates. I will also encourage teachers to be as clear as possible given the recent changes to our schedule.
Finally, I am including a message and update below from the Western Albemarle Athletics Association, our booster organization for WAHS athletics.
Thanks,
Jenn Subletter, WAHS Principal
A Message from the Western Albemarle Athletics Association (WAAA)
Our Western Albemarle Athletics Association (WAAA) has had a remarkable fall season thanks to the incredible support of our community. We wanted to highlight a few successes:
- Stadium concessions operation tripled its net fundraising from last year, a testament to the dedication of our volunteers and the enthusiasm of Warriors fans. These funds will make a direct, tangible impact on our athletic programs through new equipment, uniforms, and facility upgrades.
- WAAA also brought our community spirit on the road with a well-attended tailgate at the Heritage playoff football game, showing our Warriors they have tremendous support wherever they compete.
- Appointed Heidi Burnette as our chairperson for our Funds Allocation Committee, which will evaluate funding requests and ensure equitable distribution of resources. Heidi brings extensive nonprofit experience, having built transparent processes and fostered accountability across mission‑driven organizations. We’re seeking parents, students, and coaches to join the committee and help shape the future of Warriors athletics.
- We're in the final steps of creating an online resource for community, rosters, team management, funding requests and sponsor recognition. Look for an update in the new year.
As WAAA grows, we’re committed to open and inclusive decisions about how resources support our athletic programs alongside County funding. As a universal athletic booster club we can boost fundraising and share volunteer power more effectively, aligning with successful programs across the county and region. We invite parents, students, and coaches to join us—or simply learn more—at our next open board meeting on February 9 at 7pm via Zoom or Google Meet.
For questions or to share your interest in getting involved, we’d love to hear from you! Please complete our Volunteer Interest Form or reach out anytime at waaa-board@westernathletics.org—our board is always accessible and ready to connect with our community. Together, we're building something special for our student-athletes and beyond.

Dear Families,
We are looking forward to a couple of five-day weeks of school! Long weekends are nice, but the regular rhythm of a full week is a healthy structure for students and staff. Below are a few important reminders and opportunities to support members of our community as we move into the holiday season.
Have a great week,
Jenn Sublette, WAHS Principal
Angel Tree Program by WAHS Students: Every year, many of our homeroom classes commit to sponsoring a local elementary-aged student for the holidays. WAHS students donate money to purchase gifts from the local student’s personal wish list. Gifts are purchased, wrapped, and delivered to the students’ elementary school before winter break.
Check in with your student to see if their homeroom is participating. Money is collected each Monday during our homeroom period.
The Annual Giving Tree Program - Family Support for Neighbors in Need: The holiday season is a time for giving, and this year many families in our community need our help. The Giving Tree initiative is supporting around 150 children, including students from Henley Middle School and Western Albemarle High School, as well as their siblings. These families have been identified by school counselors as those who could use some extra support during the holidays.
To ensure safety and convenience, we are collecting funds to purchase gift cards, allowing families to shop for their own gifts. Our campaign runs from mid-November until December 5th. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference. You can donate online through GoFundMe or drop off a check at Henley Middle School.
Let’s come together to make this holiday season brighter for these families. Thank you for considering a contribution.

Sunday, October 19th
Dear Families,
We kicked off the second quarter this week! Grades for first quarter work will be finalized in PowerSchool by October 21. Below are important updates for the week and information on a few of our fall special events.
Have a good week,
Jenn Sublette, WAHS Principal
October 21 PSAT for Sophomores and Juniors: The PSAT will be given at WAHS on Tuesday, October 21. Students have been given their testing location. Please remind your students to be sure their school issued computer is fully charged for test day in addition to having their charger with them.
October 21 Plans for Freshmen and Seniors: While sophomores and juniors take the PSAT, we will offer special activities for freshmen and seniors.
- Freshmen have had the chance to sign up for activities on the morning of 10/21: a trip to walk the Blue Ridge (Crozet) Tunnel, a trip to Chiles Orchard in Crozet, a trip to Carter’s Mountain, watching a movie in the WAHS auditorium, attending a quiet study hall. Mr. Walsh is sending a notification to freshmen and their families with their assigned activity. All freshmen should report to the aux gym on Tuesday morning and we will take attendance and get them organized for the morning.
- Seniors will be able to work with school counselors on college applications or career exploration in the cafeteria. No sign-up will be required.
Sign Up for 2nd Conference Night: It was great to see so many families at our in-person conference night last week. The Sign Up Genius link for virtual conferences on Wednesday are open until the end of the school day on Tuesday, and the comprehensive list of Zoom links will be sent out by then, as well.
Trunk or Treat: Spread the word and join us for our 2nd Annual WAHS Trunk-or Treat on Saturday, October 25 from 11:00-2:00. There will be carnival games, face-painting, concessions on sale, and tons of candy. We are excited to see our community for a day of family fun.

Tuesday, October 15th
Dear Families,
We wrapped up an action-packed Spirit Week and Homecoming this weekend. I want to take a moment to thank our Leadership Class students and their teachers, Molly Ashur, Brian Ball, and Jordan Dudley, for all of their hard work. It takes a lot of coordination and planning to pull off so many whole school activities and events. I also want to thank our students and staff for their energy and engagement. Our Spirit Week is special because of the incredible levels of participation we enjoy.
We’ll get back to our normal routines and outfits this week!
Below are notes for the week including a reminder of upcoming conferences and plans for freshmen and seniors during the school day administration of the PSATs.
I hope our students are enjoying their extended weekend,
Jenn Sublette, WAHS Principal
Remind Students to Sign-Up for Warrior Period: With the shorter week, we won’t have a homeroom session this week. Students often sign up for Warrior Period during that time on Monday. Please remind your student to sign up to see teachers and check to see if they have been drafted by a teacher. Spirit Week was a fun break, but some students will need to make the most of Warrior Period this week.
Fall Conferences: Student progress conferences will be held in person on October 16 from 4:30-700pm and by Zoom on October 22 from 5:00-7:30 pm.
To reserve conference sessions, please use this Sign Up Genius link which includes sessions for both dates. If these dates and times don’t work for you, please contact your child’s teachers or school counselor to arrange for an alternate time to meet
PSAT Information: The PSAT will be given at WAHS on Tuesday, October 21. Please remind your students to be sure their school issued computer is fully charged for test day in addition to having their charger with them.
October 21 Plans for Freshmen and Seniors: While sophomores and juniors take the PSAT, we will offer special activities for freshmen and seniors.
- Freshmen and their families will receive information and permission slips this week on five options for the morning of 10/21: a trip to walk the Blue Ridge (Crozet) Tunnel, a trip to Chiles Orchard in Crozet, a trip to Carter’s Mountain, watching a movie in the WAHS auditorium, attending a quiet study hall. All options are free to students.
- Seniors will be able to work with school counselors on college applications or career exploration. No sign-up will be required.
AP Exam Registration: Students who are interested in taking AP Exams in May are required to register for the exams online this year. Registration and payment must be received by October 31 to avoid the $40.00 late fee. Please click here for all the information and the registration form for AP Exams.
The End of First Quarter: The end of the first quarter was Friday, October 10. End of year course grades are the average of first and second semester grades. The semester grade is not the average of the two quarters. Rather grades will continue to calculate for the final T1 semester grade.
However, the end of the quarter provides an important checkpoint for students, families and teachers on how students are doing in classes. Teachers will have grades up to date in PowerSchool by October 21 for work completed before the end of the quarter. Any exceptions to this will be communicated directly to families and students.
Sunday, October 5th
Dear Families,
Before I delve into our typical notes for the week ahead, I would like to take a moment to speak to the recent discussions and debates about student-run club activities at Western. APCS policy allows students to organize clubs during non-instructional time to explore their interests and perspectives. Clubs form around a variety of interests, from community service projects to political and issue-based focuses. While these clubs represent a wide range of perspectives and interests, all students are held to an expectation for respectful and orderly behavior during and beyond club activities. Club activities are supervised by school staff and administrators. We partner with student leaders to support them in carrying out club activities in an orderly manner.
I recognize that there have been specific concerns about allowing the TPUSA club to host an outside speaker during their lunchtime meeting. This decision is not an endorsement of any viewpoint or perspective. As an administrator of a public school, it is my responsibility to implement ACPS School Board policies and seek guidance when needed on how to ensure students’ rights are respected and protected. It is also my responsibility to ensure that all students do not experience harassment or discrimination. By working with student leaders from a range of student-run organizations as well as WAHS and ACPS staff, we will work together to safeguard student’s individual rights within a supportive environment for all students.
During my four years as Western’s principal, we have worked together to strengthen our school culture and create an environment of respect and belonging. Many of you have heard me say in meetings or presentations that my guiding belief is that “we are everybody’s school.” That continues to be true. We want students to understand that they can hold a wide variety of opinions and perspectives and still be part of a larger community. As adults who care about all of our students, we will continue to expect our students to treat all of their peers with respect and kindness.
This week we kick off Spirit Week. On the surface, Spirit Week may seem like a series of purely fun activities that give us a break from the typical stress of a school week. However, these traditions and activities are critical aspects of how we build a stronger school culture. Students are with us for just four years, but we work hard to help them have a high school experience where they develop their own sense of voice and agency while learning to be a part of a broader community.
Those same values of respect and connection guide how we move through this current moment. I recognize that the debate around upcoming student-run club activities has been heated and challenging. My commitment to maintaining a safe and orderly environment for all students is unwavering. Moving forward, I hope that we can work together as a school community to support all students. We are everybody’s school.
Thank you,
Jenn Sublette, WAHS Principal
Spirit Week and Homecoming Dance Tickets: It’s time to dig out the blue tutus and neon traffic vests. Here is our Spirit Week overview document for last minute checks on theme days and details for the week.
In addition to MySchoolBucks, tickets for the dance on October 11 can be purchased in person during lunch with cash or check all this week. Please remind your student that tickets are NOT sold at the dance. The dance is from 8:00 to 10:00pm.
The End of First Quarter: The end of the first quarter is this Friday, October 10.
Student Progress Conferences: We will be sharing the sign-up genius links for our fall conference this week for both in-person conferences on October 16 from 4:30-7:00 and conferences on Zoom on October 22 from 5:00 to 7:30.
PSAT Information: The PSAT will be given to all students in grades 10 and 11. Counselors will be going into English classrooms on Monday and Tuesday, October 6 and 7 to walk students through their Digital Readiness protocol. Please remind your students to bring their charged school issued computers those days. The PSAT will be given at WAHS on Tuesday, May 21.
AP Exam Registration: Students who are interested in taking AP Exams in May are required to register for the exams online this year. Registration and payment must be received by October 31 to avoid the $40.00 late fee. Please click here for all the information and the registration form for AP Exams.
Sunday, September 28th
Dear Families,
Thank you to the families new to WAHS who came out last week for the check-in with me. It was great to have a chance to connect and answer questions. In our conversation about how to support students in their time management and studying, we realized it would be helpful to remind all families that you can log into Schoology (our online learning management system) to help monitor upcoming assignments and assessments with your student. The family log on link and directions are here.
Below are a couple of updates and details as we move into October. This is a busy but exciting time at WAHS!
Jenn Sublette, WAHS Principal
Spirit Week and Homecoming Dance Tickets
We are gearing up for the start of spirit week activities! Here is a link to the overview document that we sent out last week.
Our homecoming dance will be on October 11. Students can purchase tickets at an early bird discount on MySchoolBucks from September 29 to October 10. Tickets can be purchased in person during lunch with cash or check from Oct 6th to 10th. Homeroom slides will share the early bird pricing dates. Please remind your student that tickets are NOT sold at the dance.
For students who would like to bring a guest who does not attend Western, we will sell a limited number of guest tickets. There is a special permission form, available in the main office, that must be completed before a guest ticket is purchased. Guest tickets are $20 and can only be purchased by cash or check from our bookkeeper, Mrs. Thompson. Detailed instructions will be shared with students during homeroom on Monday.
Fall Conferences
We will be sharing the sign-up genius links for our fall conferences soon. We will hold in-person conferences on October 16 from 4:30-7:00 and conferences on Zoom on October 22 from 5:00 to 7:30. We hope that having two different options for conferences is helpful to families. Please know that you are welcome to request a meeting with a teacher at any point in the year.
Sunday, September 22nd
Good evening,
I would like to start this week’s message with a special thank you to the United Way Day of Caring volunteers who braved the rain to tackle some much needed weeding and clean up around our greenhouse. We appreciate the community support!
This is a short week for students who don’t have school on Friday. I hope they enjoy their three-day weekend.
I am hosting a principal meet-and-greet for families new to WAHS on September 24. A copy of the full invite that went out is below, since there is still time to RSVP. We will host similar events for all WAHS families during the year.
Thanks,
Jenn Sublette, WAHS Principal
Dear Families New to Western,
I hope that your student has settled into the year and their new school. I know that for some of you this is not your first student to attend Western, but for many of you this is a new school and there is a lot to adjust to in a new school community.
I will have several community events this year where all of our families are invited to join me to connect and discuss common topics of interest. However, I am reserving the first of these events for families new to us.
I had originally hoped to have these events at the start of the day, but, given traffic, limited parking, and the many moving parts to the start of the school day, I am moving these events to the early evening. I hope you can join me in this and future events. Please use this link to RSVP for September 24.
I’m working on a pithy title for these get-togethers and open to any clever suggestions!
-Jenn Sublette, WAHS Principal
What: Snack Hour with Ms. Sublette
Date: September 24 (new date to accommodate after school timing)
Time: 5:00 – 6:00pm
Where: WAHS Library
Sunday, September 14
Dear Families,
Below are a few informational items and a request from our PTO volunteers. I want to also share that we will be reminding students that they are expected to use their ACPS issued laptop during the school day. School issued laptops work best with our security tools and approved software as well as comply with the ban on personal communication devices during the school day. Please help us reiterate this expectation with your student, if they have a personal laptop or tablet.
Have a good week,
Jenn Sublette, WAHS Principal
Upcoming Staff Development Day
After this full week, next week (9/22-9/26) is a four- day week with no school for students on 9/26. With several weeks under our belt, a day for professional learning and reflection on the year so far is a very helpful for ingredient to a strong school year.
Post High School Planning Night:
The Western School Counseling team will be hosting our annual Post High School Planning Night on Thursday, September 18 from 6:00 - 7:30 PM in the Auditorium. This event is especially helpful for parents of seniors, but all are welcome. We will share Career Information, discuss the College Application Process, and have a presentation on Financial Aid by Rylie Carlson, Associate Director of Financial Aid, from UVA.
Support our WAHS PTO:
The WAHS PTO is sponsoring a Fall Fund Drive. This money will be used to:
- Host monthly appreciation events for 100+ WAHS staff members
- Provide classroom grants of up to $500
- Support school requests of assistance for students in need, including programs that provide supplemental food and sports equipment
Please donate today through MySchoolBucks to help us reach our $10,000 fundraising goal (we are currently only at $5,200).
A Message from our Yearbook Staff
Hello WAHS Families! We’d like to take this opportunity to share some important dates and links with you regarding the 2025-2026 WAHS Yearbook. We’re still finalizing our page count, coverage, and order deadlines, but we’ve already received some questions about this year’s book, the 49th edition of the WAHS Odyssey. Look for more communication in the future!

Additional notes:
- We are accepting Senior Portraits differently this year. Please follow the instructions in the video linked above, and here.
- We would love your input in these final stages of shaping this year’s Odyssey. The best way to get the yearbook you want is by exploring the links above and especially by completing the surveys.
- Since our school year ends a bit earlier this year, we have to submit the book a bit earlier as well. We are committed to getting our yearbook to WAHS before Seniors leave campus in May. That means we’ll be submitting our book to the publisher on March 28th, about two weeks earlier than we did last year. One consideration we’re having to make as a result is deciding what we are able to put in the body of our book and what we will be featured in our free supplement, which will easily and permanently attach to the book. Clubs, teams, and organizations will be contacted well in advance if their activity will be featured in the supplement.
- We have distributed all the reprints of last year’s yearbook to those students who currently attend WAHS. If you did not receive your reprint, please email wahsyearbook@k12albemarle.org.
Sunday, September 7th
It was great to see so many families at Back to School Night this week. Thank you for making the time to join us.
As you know, we kicked off daily weapons screening this week. Students have been very cooperative as we work to make the morning flow as efficient as possible. We are all learning a lot. I will say I have been struck by just how nice it is to get a chance to individually say good morning to students as they come through. I love a good silver lining!
Below are a few notes for the coming week:
- It's time to complete the annual Registration Verification for your student. This verification process allows you to update contact information (including Emergency Contacts), student medical information, and to review and sign annual agreements (including Media Opt In/Out, and Military Contacts Opt In/Out) for this current school year. For directions on how to complete the verification, please visit this webpage. Registrations must be updated by September 25.
- If you would like to receive a copy of the daily announcements we share with students each morning, please subscribe using this form. This is a great way to hear about information such as club meetings, college visits, and special events such as spirit week.
- Underclass picture days are September 10 and 11. Most students will take pictures during their English class. Students who take English at a different campus will get a pass to have their picture taken on the day they are at WAHS.
- The annual Regional College Fair is at Charlottesville High School on the evening of September 11. All local high school students and families are invited to attend.
- There is a student-run food drive happening this week. Donations can be dropped off in the main office or cafeteria. Thank you for supporting both our community and this student initiative.
Thanks and have a good week,
Jenn Sublette, WAHS Principal
Monday, September 1st
Dear Families,
I hope everyone enjoyed the three-day weekend. We are gearing up for a busy week at WAHS.
We will begin using the new weapons detection screening system on Thursday morning. We will do our best to have clear signs and directions in place, but we do anticipate that it will take us all a few days to get as efficient as possible with the new system. If you drive your student to school, please try to come a few minutes early. The main office entrance will open at 7:50 and the athletic lobby entrance will open at 8:15.
Thursday is our annual Back to School Night for parents and guardians to come meet teachers and other staff members. The detailed schedule for the evening is below.
- Our library will be open from 5:30 to 8:00 for families to come see one of our most popular spaces in school and explore new resources.
- Several of our special programs will have sessions at 6:00pm to provide information and answer questions.
- I will share our annual state of the school presentation in the auditorium at 6:30.
- Starting at 7:00, families will follow their students' A Day and B Day schedules.
While the time in each class is quick, it is so nice to be able to make an in-person connection between teachers and families.
Speaking of the importance of teacher and family connections, WAHS has an informal but extremely supportive PTO. The group organizes monthly staff appreciation events, hosts the WAHS Families Facebook page, and provides additional support to staff and students throughout the year through programs like classroom grants and snacks for students in need. Find out more (including a link to donate) by clicking here. Questions? Comments? Feel free to reach out to them at wahsstaffappreciation@gmail.com. I personally can’t thank our family volunteers enough and appreciate that they welcome any and all levels of involvement.
Hope to see you on Thursday night,

Dear Families,
Our first full week of school is in the books! Below are a few announcements for this coming week plus information on opportunities for the behind-the-wheel portion of driver’s education and this year’s regional college fair.
Our annual Back to School Night for families is September 4. We will send out a detailed schedule by the end of this week.
Thanks,

Dear Families,
We are gearing up for our first full week of school.
Our counselors have been working diligently to resolve schedule issues and meet with students about course changes. The fastest way for a student to make an appointment with their counselor is to use this Google form.
We will continue to have back to school Warrior Period sessions this week. We will be reviewing our rollout of the weapons detection system that we will launch in September, our new electronic pass system, and staff members who are our student supports plus hosting class meetings. These sessions help us lay the foundation for the year.
Looking forward to a full week of school!
Jenn Sublette, WAHS Principal
