Database vs. Journal

What is the difference between a database, a journal, and an article?

You may have heard your teachers and librarians talk about databases, journals, and articles - but how do they differ from each other and how do we use each of them?

A database is a digital, searchable container that can hold anything from books to journal articles to government documents. Journals are periodicals - meaning they are publications that come out in issues on a regular basis. Each issue of a journal contains individual articles. In school, we most often use databases to search for individual articles. These articles come up in our searches as detached from their individual journal issues.
